Formula

Dynamic and kinematic viscosity are related by liquid density:

ν = μ / ρ
μ = ν · ρ

Where:

  • μ = dynamic viscosity [Pa·s]
  • ν = kinematic viscosity [m²/s]
  • ρ = liquid density [kg/m³]
  • 1 cP = 1 mPa·s
  • 1 cSt = 1 mm²/s

Engineering note

For water at approximately 20 °C, dynamic viscosity is about 1 mPa·s and kinematic viscosity is about 1 cSt because water density is close to 1000 kg/m³. For oils and process liquids, always use viscosity and density at the actual operating temperature.
